FLOWERS FOR THE DEAD (US)

Flowers for the Dead have built their audience around their unique brand of
hypnotic, 90s-inspired rock. After the regional success of their 2024 album,
Magnolia, the Washington D.C. based band released their most recent EP, "First
Place" in August. This latest EP from Flowers for the Dead kicks off a new chapter
for the Washington
D.C. trio known for their modern take on ’90s grunge. After leaning into the noise
on Magnolia, the EP’s four songs find the group experimenting with a softer, more
intentional sound while examining the pursuit and politics of community, friendship,
and love. The title recalls a vintage pin—pictured on the cover art—that proclaims
“1st prize big shot.” This absurd notion of being a proud egoist captures the sly
humor of an EP filled with “sarcastic screw you songs” faintly tinged with hope,
all beaming with the shared assurance of a band finding their own identity.

26 mei, op zomerfeest bij een vriendin ontstond het idee om een bandje op te starten. Al wat het nodig had: meezing-liedjes, een gitaar en iets teveel glaasjes wijn. Een paar dagen later begonnen Rinesa en Leana al op een zolderkamer aan de Dampoort een paar covertjes te spelen en werd een insta-postje gemaakt. Jef, die ze hadden leren kennen op café, antwoordde op de post: "Hebben jullie een drummer nodig?, anders een keer jamsessie?" Dries, de bassist, werd al snel gevraagd om mee te spelen, wegens zijn kennis van muziektheorie en productie.
